Zuri

Mentorship Notes

(with David)

Goal

Zuri would like to learn how to draw more realistically and also deepen her skills with cartoon images. (I can be most helpful with cartoony drawing.) She likes drawing faces and would like to learn how to animate. She sketches frequently on her own. She has a MacBook Air and would like to start trying to do digital art.
She got excited about the idea of creating an animated GIF where (maybe 5) faces morph into each other. She’s passionate about diversity and would like to show the faces of different races of people blending together. Possibly showing different expressions: serious face, smiling, laughing, crying, and eye rolling.

Next Steps
I suggested she download Krita and told her I’d give her a quick tutorial. I’d like to show her how to start with a pencil drawing and import it into the computer and then trace and color it in the computer.

Mentorship Notes 2

Zuri wants to paint a few canvases and put them up in her room. She has been looking at different creative apps.

Concrete steps for 3 remaining weeks

1) Sketch 5 diverse faces in pencil

2) Trace them all in Krita

3) Search out animation styles she likes on social media

4) Learn how to make different frames for her animation

She has an idea of having faces get hit with a pie or cake. Maybe use it for the animation, maybe not.

She wants to write all her accomplishments in her journal. She’ll share an animated GIF at the end. Slide show with some images / text.

Mentorship Notes 3

What does success look like?

Success looks like me trying to inspire other people I also want to do this for myself - to make myself comfortable and happy with what I want to do

Learn something new that I haven’t done before.

What do I want to accomplish?

—GIF - show diversity - all different races come together and create one race

—I haven’t had a lot of direct experience with racism, just people moving away from each other naturally—separating and joining their own cliques - maybe they feel more comfortable that way, they have more similarities

—I’ve seen everything going on 2020 - LOTS of stuff going on, hard to understand

—I want to make a picture to help everyone have better thoughts, be more positive

—“World peace, blah blah blah” - this made us both laugh

—Draw the faces out of my imagination, not from life

Some text for the slides to help explain the GIF:

“You can separate different groups But you can’t separate one person”

What did you think about Mr Edwards?

He brought back treasures, artifacts, but built relationships with people he visited He didn’t steal it or fight for it - he asked nicely and got it that way. He also got the bonus of making friends with these people along the way

He understands the meaning of each artifact - that’s why it speaks to him Bringing back a piece of that group he met with him

“I believe the objects do have powers in them. Of course!”

This week:

Zuri already sketched out 5 faces she wants to use - will email to David later today.

She plans to copy / trace them all in Krita. She’ll make sure they’re about the same size, lined up on top of each other.

She hasn’t had time to do reflections each week. She’d rather do one video at the very end and document her progress with the notes she’s been taking.
